Community Involvement is Year Round at Federico
Foremost on all of our minds now that the holiday spirit is with us, is charity work and involvement in the community. 2009 was a busy year for giving back to the community and it became a year-round project for Federico Beauty Institute. Supporting many local charities, Federico students and staff volunteered at events throughout the year. To practice their skills in new settings, students receive credit hours for the time they spend at these events.
Welcome to Our World
On April 27th the State Capital building was taken over by professionals and students from the beauty industry during the Welcome to Our World event. In a tent set up outside the Capital building, the Professional Beauty Federation of California hosted the event, where legislators, staff members, and cosmetology board members receive complimentary services. Beauty treatments, styling services, and haircuts were provided by Federico students.
The Mustard Seed Program
Students and staff provided hair and nail services to the children of the Mustard Seed Program in May and October. Homeless children ages 3-15 years old are eligible for this free private school program. For one little girl, they even added some pink highlights, as Federico students gave children haircuts and new styles.
Homeless Connect Event
Federico students provided free haircuts and pedicures at this event. Over 700 homeless people gathered at Sacramento City College on May 30th. The program helps people prepare for job interviews and gain back confidence.
Blowouts and Beauty for Brody
A select menu of services was provided on July 28th by Federico students at AJF Salon. The HUS Foundation received all of the money raised from these services. A one year old boy in the salon's extended family named Brody Swarbrick was diagnosed with Hemolyptic Uremic Syndrome, and the HUS Foundation was founded after this diagnosis.
Vietnam Stand Down
In the Sacramento area on September 18th and 19th, students provided haircuts and shaves to veterans., The Stand Down is a three day program that brings homeless veterans and their dependents together where they receive housing, food, and care.
Sacramento Wig Bank
Year-round, cancer victims will find a wig bank program that is run by Federico Beauty Institute. Hundreds of women in need are provided with free wigs and styling services by the wig bank. Women battling cancer can find confidence and support from the students who provide these styling services.
