A Cosmetology Education with Pivot Point Takes You to a Higher Level of Creativity

How would you feel if you could spend the slow times at work looking at celebrity and fashion magazines and wouldn't upset your supervisor? When you're a Licensed Cosmetologist, in the time between customers, you will be encouraged to remain current with the most recent fads in hairdos and clothing styles to create the best, most stylish decisions for your customers. Cosmetology is a great career choice for individuals with a desire to use their creativity to change peoples' hair into interesting works of art.

Hair Trends 2009

According to fashionising.com, all through 2008, haircuts got shorter and shorter. Fashionising.com is an online fashion community that serves as a social network for folks who love fashion and work in the fashion industry. The website "fashionistas" observed styles ranging from pixie-crops to bob cuts. The short and light bob look, along with the short boy-cut, are the trendy hairstyles for 2009, too.

The bob haircut is no longer unique in 2009, but still popular. Fashion forward women are faced with a dilemma in 2009. Should they keep their bobs, stand out by seeking even shorter haircuts, or let their hair grow long?

State-of-the-Art Cosmetology Education

Yolly ten Koppel is a state-of-the-art cosmetology educator. She is the International Artistic Director for Pivot Point International and responsible for keeping close tabs on the world of fashion every day. Ten Koppel says, "This is the best profession because it is innovative and never dull. We hair designers need to interpret clothing trends and lifestyles into our hair designs. Clients expect you, as a hair designer, to know what's fashionable. They don't want a cookie-cutter haircut, but one that's trendy and customized to their individual lifestyle." According to ten Koppel, cosmetology students should pay close attention to all the latest trends.

In September 2008, students of the Federico Beauty Institute met with ten Koppel in person. She gave a workshop in Advanced Haircutting at the campus in Sacramento. Just the Federico students who finished and mastered hair sculpting class met the requirements to participate in the workshop.

Ten Koppel received the Coiffure award three times, and she is the winner of the U.S. Educator of the Year award. Not only is she the three-time winner of this prestigious award, she is also recognized as one of Pivot Point’s most well-known ambassadors at industry shows. From entry-level to professional designers and educators, she trains and teaches them all.

In 1962, Pivot Point International was established by Leo Passage and is the industry's most well known supplier of educational tools and design resources. Federico Beauty Institute is part of a very large network of Pivot Point Member Schools, which can be found in 70 countries around the world. The Pivot Point system of education graduates over 50,000 cosmetologists a year world-wide.

It used to be thought that successful hair designers are born, not made. Leo Passage changed the thinking that made up the foundation of cosmetology education and put an end to this myth. Based on what Passage says, a talented artist is created, and not naturally born.

Pivot Point not only teaches the technical know-how (or the "how"); it also strives to impart the freedom to create (or the "why"). Students are trained to elevate their artistic and technical skills to the highest level at Pivot Point Member Schools. A Pivot Point training program instructs students to use their eyes and brain, as well as to be creative and versatile as a designer - not just copy the current fashion fads, but be original and start new trends.

Setting the standard in beauty education, Pivot Point has launched many to the top of the hair and beauty field, including:

  • Dean Banowetz, who is the head stylist for American Idol.
  • David Raccuglia, who is the founder of American Crew hair products for men.
  • Christine Schuster, who is the senior vice president at Redken.
  • Andre Walker who is five-time Emmy winner and personal stylist to Oprah.

The talent, knowledge and skills gained from the Pivot Point education provided by Federico Beauty Institute opens a variety of exciting beauty career opportunities, whether it's working in a top salon, running your own business, competing on the international circuit, or heading toward the fashion stage.
